Hi Dave! Yes, the rod was flexing somewhat which made a "soft shift". I'm not sure if that was standard or if it came after the good stomp. Maybe both, but the drilled out bolt works perfectly & fits well. I also had it lengthed by about 1/8" which helped a bit on adjustment. Now the shift is more definite and "hard", sort of like a "clink" into gear. I'm not far from the Blue Ridge myself (in NC) so I am sure the riding is beautiful. Let me know what you do!
